The instruments found in post mortem sets vary but most, even today, have a heavy hammer, a saw, scalpels, clips and dissecting scissors as found in this old set. This set is likely to have also contained a chisel, forceps, retractors, suture needles and a blowpipe (used to inflate arteries and veins).A post-mortem set (or autopsy kit) is a comprehensive collection of specialized surgical instruments used by forensic pathologists, coroners, and medical students to conduct thorough internal and external examinations of a body. These sets are typically made from surgical-grade stainless steel (grades 304, 410, or 420) to ensure they are rust-proof, durable, and easily autoclavable for reuse.

• Cutting Instruments: Essential for incisions and organ removal, including an Amputation Saw, Brain Knife, Cartilage Knife, and multiple Scalpels.
• Specialized Scissors: Features Bowel Scissors (with a blunt tip to prevent organ perforation) and heavy-duty Post-Mortem Scissors.
• Bone Tools: Includes a Bone Cutting Forceps, Bone Shears, a Metal Mallet (Hammer), and Chisels (often with detachable handles) for opening the skull and chest cavity.

These are similar to the instruments that a surgeon uses during an operation and include a scalpel, a larger knife called a PM40, forceps for gripping tissue, ladles for removing and measuring body fluids, a long bladed knife for slicing organs and specialised scissors (called an enterotome) for opening the bowel.
